Its the middle of summer, and the Nor Cal vs So Cal round of Vtec Club was about to begin. Everyone attending the event was hoping we would catch a break with the weather…
…but soon after unloading, it became apparent it would be warm, and it was going to stay that way. Not losing any time, many driver’s began working on some last-minute fixes before the event officially began.
It was hot. There’s always a silver lining, however. so we threw some bad hombres on the “mani-grill” while other driver’s finished prepping.
Gio (along with the help of many friends), had just barely managed to get the “official” Exciting Hero EK ready for the event. There was more he wanted to do with the car before racing, but time and budget is always the leading factor behind compromise. Nevertheless, the car made it despite rubbing issues with the tires (even at such a tall ride height), and it drove well for a benchmark setup.
The Nor Cal vs So Cal event gives many drivers who normally can’t make the drive the opportunity to race, leading to a more diverse field of cars. Such as this pair of beautiful EK’s. Christian’s car had actually been a Super Street feature car back in the day. It’s quite a sight seeing such a car hit the track!
The first heat was spent familiarizing ourselves with Buttonwillow’s Counter Clockwise (CCW13) layout. A configuration not many of us at Vtec club have driven before… we found ourselves searching for the limit of grip, and finding a lack thereof.
This was our first time seeing Gerry’s car after the purple color change. He wears it well!
It’s always great seeing familiar faces in unfamiliar places. Wolfreign Motors is best known for their involvement within the drifting community, so it was a pleasure to see them out at Vtec Club piloting a B18 powered EG hatch, very much looking the part and oozing a style all its own.
Among the attendees were a number of new FK8 Type R’s. It’s been very gratifying seeing the new chassis take it’s foothold in the community and grow it’s own identity as the owners modify them to suit their needs. Track prepped FK8’s are clearly the best FK8’s.
New car, same old passion.
Goldie of FF Squad fame was in top form, as always.
The best time of the day was set early on by Jose in his blisteringly fast DC, setting an unreal lap time of 1:57.3, taking the overall victory for So Cal.
It’s always nice seeing a Fit racing, and I’m still at a loss as to why these cars aren’t modified and raced more often. Props to this GK owner!
While the rest of the community may have forgotten about the DA chassis, Track Unit out of Nor Cal certainly hasn’t; the majority of the team is comprised of DA chassis Integras, and they more than hold their own on track. Unfortunately, fan-favorite Jimmy with his battleship gray and extremely quick H2B powered ‘Harambe’ DA couldn’t make it, leaving Track Unit without a key member in the Nor Cal vs So Cal competition.
We couldn’t get enough of Andrew’s EG, and for good reason. It just looks cool. So cool it won the “Coolest Car Award” that day, and rightfully so.
Ryan had all but completely destroyed his front bumper by this point. Despite being in three pieces, it managed to survive the day thanks to some duct tape, only to be put out of its misery a few days later under the wheels of a CR-V.
The BattleCraft EK was looking and running well as usual, and even got a podium finish!
A class racing in Vtec Club is almost always dominated by S2000’s, and there were plenty to go around.
As the day progressively got hotter and track temperatures raised along with strain on tires, engines, and drivers, you could say the battle between Nor Cal and So Cal really was really heating up. However, most of the fastest drivers had already called it quits as there was no way they would hit a PB with the intense heat bearing down on the track. Most of the remaining drivers were in it for the fun at this point.
It was a hot one to be sure, but as is the case with all Vtec Club events, it was full of camaraderie and passion. One of the last bastions for us racing enthusiasts. Always a good time at Vtec Club!
